New Caledonia is known for its huge nickel deposits, which becomes its major export. Exports to New Caledonia revolve around foodstuffs, building, construction and mining. Other islands and towns in New Caledonia are all served from Noumea, and all customs clearance service must take place in Noumea.
Despite the nearness of New Caledonia, freight rates for air, courier, or seafreight are relatively expensive. This is because of infrastructure costs, and the fact that in the main, freight services are one way only.
